SheOwns: Building a Kenyan Network of Women-Led Sustainable Enterprises
To accelerate the economic independence of 10,000 women entrepreneurs in Kenya by the end of 2027, through innovative, sustainable, and digitally enabled enterprise development ensuring equitable access to affordable finance, regional markets, mentorship, and technology, while fostering a dynamic pan-African women’s business network that drives job creation, resilience, and inclusive growth.
Implementation Strategy
Sustainable Enterprise Incubation
- Launch “SheOwns Labs” in 15 counties: 6-month incubation programs blending business model innovation (circular economy, green products, digital services), sustainability planning (climate-resilient supply chains, waste reduction), and digital transformation (e-commerce setup, social media marketing, fintech tools).
- Focus on high-potential sectors: agro-processing, clean energy, creative industries, and digital services.
Inclusive Financial Ecosystem
- Co-design a Women’s Finance App (“MamaFund”) with fintech partners: group savings, low-interest loans (≤8%), credit scoring via mobile transactions, and financial literacy micro-lessons integrated with M-Pesa, NYOTA, and Women Enterprise Fund disbursement systems.
- Pilot alternative lending models: asset-light guarantees (using group collateral or future sales) and grant-loan hybrids for first-time entrepreneurs.
- Partner with county governments to capitalize revolving funds for women’s cooperatives.
Pan-African Market Access
- Create the “AfriShe Trade Network”: a digital marketplace connecting Kenyan women entrepreneurs to buyers in Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, DRC, and Nigeria.
- Facilitate participation in EAC trade fairs, AfCFTA SME forums, and diaspora pop-ups (London, Dubai, Atlanta).
- Conduct market intelligence workshops on untapped opportunities (e.g. organic shea butter, digital content for Francophone Africa).
Mentorship & Skills Development
- “MamaMentor” Program: pair 1,000 emerging entrepreneurs with seasoned business women (local & diaspora); monthly virtual clinics on pricing, branding, export compliance, and investor pitching.
- Mobile-first training via WhatsApp on bookkeeping (using M-Pesa Business), customer retention, and navigating county procurement portals.
Strategic Funding & Partnerships
- Mobilize blended capital: national (Kenya Women Enterprise Fund, NYOTA, BETA county funds), county (gender and youth enterprise budgets aligned with CIDPs), international (AU-NEPAD, UN Women, AfDB’s AFAWA), and philanthropy.
- Establish a SheOwns Impact Fund with a $2M target for scale-up capital.
Cross-Border Networking & Knowledge Exchange
- Host quarterly “SheOwns Circles”: virtual and in-person gatherings linking Kenyan women with peers in Lagos, Kigali, Accra, and Johannesburg, focused on e-commerce logistics, joint ventures, and policy advocacy.
- Publish a “Women’s Business Playbook” featuring success stories, pricing templates, and export checklists.
Technology & Innovation Integration
- Equip entrepreneurs with AI-assisted tools: chatbots for customer service, AI-driven market trend alerts, and automated inventory management via simple SMS/USSD.
- Promote tech adoption grants for women buying digital tools (e.g. POS systems, solar dryers with IoT sensors).
Target Beneficiaries
- Women micro, small, and growing entrepreneurs (ages 18–45)
- Youth-led startups (60% under age 30)
- Rural and peri-urban women in informal trade seeking formalization
- Women’s cooperatives and self-help groups
