Theme 04
Feminism and Crossroads
Feminism at Crossroads: Building an Inclusive, Intersectional & Future-Ready Feminist Movement in Kenya
To strengthen a dynamic, homegrown feminist consciousness in Kenya by creating safe, intergenerational spaces for critical dialogue on contemporary gender issues centering intersectionality, economic justice, digital transformation, and cultural reimagining while actively countering anti-feminist disinformation and fostering solidarity across race, class, ethnicity, ability, and geography. This project will equip 5,000 young women, men, and gender-diverse individuals with critical feminist literacy, narrative-shifting tools, and cross-movement alliances to advance gender justice in homes, workplaces, digital spaces, and policy arenas positioning Kenya as a leader in Africa’s evolving feminist discourse.
Implementation Strategy
Feminist Learning & Dialogue Hubs
- Establish “Crossroads Circles” in 10 counties (urban + rural): monthly community dialogues on contemporary feminist thought (African feminism, ecofeminism, radical feminism), intersectionality in practice, and lessons from global movements like #FeminismInNigeria, #TotalShutdownSA, and the Latin American green wave.
- Use story circles, theatre of the oppressed, and digital storytelling to center lived experiences.
Countering Toxic Narratives & Digital Misogyny
- Launch #MyFeminismIs campaign: a social media toolkit debunking “manosphere” myths, with short videos featuring diverse voices (fathers, pastors, tech bros, grandmothers) affirming feminism as justice.
- Train 100 Digital Feminist Ambassadors to moderate online spaces and counter hate speech.
- Publish “Feminist Myth vs. Fact” zines in Swahili, Sheng, and English for schools and barazas.
Rethinking Work, Care & Autonomy
- Host “Beyond the Binary: Career, Care & Choice” forums challenging the false choice between “family vs. career” and spotlighting men as co-caregivers, paternity leave advocates, and feminist allies.
- Promote policy demands: universal childcare, flexible work, parental leave for all genders.
- Create a “Care Economy Manifesto” co-drafted with domestic workers, nurses, and mothers.
Feminism in the Age of Tech & Economic Shifts
- Produce a “Feminist Tech Futures” series examining how AI, automation, and gig work impact women (algorithmic bias, platform precarity), and feminist responses like data justice, ethical AI, and women in tech ownership.
- Organize “Future of Work” labs with women in displaced sectors (retail, clerical) to explore just transitions.
Reclaiming Culture & Tradition
- Facilitate intergenerational dialogues between elders and youth on which traditions empower women, which harm, and reimagining rites of passage without FGM or early marriage.
- Support cultural innovators poets, musicians, fashion designers who blend heritage with feminist values.
Pan-African & Global Solidarity
- Host a “Global Feminist Exchange” at the Kenya Women Conference 2026, with virtual panels featuring feminists from Senegal, South Africa, Canada, UK, USA, India, and Brazil on bodily autonomy, land rights, digital rights, and anti-militarism.
- Translate key global feminist texts into accessible local formats (podcasts, radio dramas).
Movement Building & Leadership
- Launch the “Next Gen Feminist Fellowship”: a 6-month program for 100 young leaders (50% rural, 20% male allies, 10% LGBTQ+), training in feminist facilitation, policy advocacy, digital safety, and self-care.
- Build a National Feminist Network to coordinate actions on shared priorities.
Target Groups
- Young women and men (18–35) in universities, informal settlements, and rural communities
- Feminist activists, artists, journalists, and faith leaders
- Policymakers and educators open to gender-transformative dialogue
