Women in Electoral Politics
Her Seat, Her Voice: Accelerating Women’s Leadership in Kenya’s Electoral Politics
To break systemic, financial, and cultural barriers preventing women’s full participation in Kenya’s electoral politics by building a national pipeline of 500+ skilled, funded, and networked women candidates and leaders equipped to run, win, and govern effectively at ward, county, and national levels by 2027, while advancing gender-responsive policy implementation and reshaping public narratives about women’s leadership.
Implementation Strategy
Political Leadership Pipeline Development
- Launch the “Her Seat Academy”: a 6-month intensive leadership program for women aspiring to run for office (MCAs, women reps, MPs, senators, governors), covering constitutional & devolved governance, public speaking, digital campaigning, and ethical leadership.
- Prioritize diverse representation: youth (under 35), persons with disabilities, ASAL regions, and grassroots activists.
Campaign Strategy & Funding Support
- Establish the “Her Fund”: seed grants (KES 200,000–1M) for viable women candidates, campaign matching funds (1:1 match for private donations), and in-kind pro bono legal, media, and data analytics support.
- Partner with political parties on internal women candidate quotas and fair nomination processes, and train women on crowdfunding, digital fundraising, and donor compliance.
Strategic Campaign & Narrative Building
- Deploy “Her Campaign Labs”: data-driven voter mapping, message testing, and social media strategy clinics, equipping candidates to counter gendered hate speech and online violence.
- Run a national #HerSeatHerVoice media campaign to humanize women leaders and challenge stereotypes like “women can’t lead” with evidence of their governance impact.
Policy Advocacy & Governance Excellence
- Create the “Women Legislators’ Policy Hub” to support elected women in drafting, tabling, and monitoring gender-responsive laws, with research fellows strengthening legislative drafting capacity.
- Advocate for electoral reforms: court-mandated timelines to enforce the two-thirds gender rule, and public financing of women candidates via IEBC and National Treasury.
Cross-Level Mentorship & Solidarity Networks
- Build the “Sisterhood of Governance”: pairing aspiring candidates with sitting women leaders (e.g. MPs mentoring MCAs), with quarterly forums on budgeting, oversight, and coalition-building.
- Establish County Women in Politics Coalitions to coordinate pre- and post-election support.
Pre- and Post-Election Safeguards
- Pre-election: legal aid desks to challenge discriminatory party primaries, plus security planning for women facing intimidation.
- Post-election: a “First 100 Days” onboarding program for newly elected women, and performance scorecards to track delivery on gender promises.
Target Beneficiaries
- Aspiring women candidates (ward to national level)
- Newly elected women leaders (2022 cohort + future winners)
- Women’s wings of political parties
- Youth women activists and student leaders
